Contactless health security micro-app

I designed a contactless health-screening micro-app that replaced manual paper logs with instant QR-based building access.

Problem

The COVID-19 pandemic left property managers with the problem of screening technicians for health compliance protocols.  Relying on paper forms at building entrances created an immediate health risk while choking up check-in lines, and made tracking impossible.

Totem's core platform had no existing module to handle real-time health verification or instant access revocation. They required a fast, reliable standalone solution.

Approach

I defined a standalone health-screening micro-app, designing a time-sensitive QR-token system that tied a contractor's self-reported health questionnaire directly to their digital building pass.

    Simulating at-the-door interactions

    Using high-fidelity prototypes, I simulated the high-volume scanning process to uncover and fix layout friction points before development began.

    Dynamic QR status generation

    Designed a clean, high-contrast QR results screen that gave security guards an instant, unmistakable visual confirmation — approved or denied.

    Enterprise oversight dashboard

    I designed a real-time management dashboard for building administrators, sorting visitors into clear, color-coded categories.

    Cross-platform consistency

    I designed the interface to work flawlessly across mobile phones for contractors and mounted tablets used by security staff, ensuring a seamless handoff between roles.

    Standalone micro-app architecture

    To avoid overloading the core product, we built this as a standalone micro-app, keeping the primary platform clean while shipping updates to the health app independently as regulations changed.

Outcome

This solution completely replaced manual paper logs, removing check-in delays at the door and ensuring building managers maintained 100% compliance with shifting health and safety mandates.

Stepping into a crisis-response project reinforced the value of absolute utility over aesthetics. When speed is critical, the interface has to be foolproof. Looking back, dedicating more time to testing edge-case error messages with users under real-world pressure could have ironed out minor initial confusion at the scanning stations, but the app ultimately did exactly what it promised, kept buildings safe and lines moving.
